Golf putters very well may be the most important club in your
golf bag. Although most people love their drivers and these clubs
tend to be the most expensive, when you think about it, there
is really nothing that trumps the putter in importance.
For example, even though you might use your driver on nearly
every hole, there are always going to be a couple of par threes
where you decide instead to use something like a three iron or
a five iron in order to avoid overshooting the hole. By the time
the round ends, you probably have used your driver on about 12-14
of the holes on the course.
Now think about how often you use your putter. Unless you are
making some amazing eagles from 120 yards out from the hole, chances
are you are using your putter on every hole. It is very rare that
you do not use your putter on a hole.
There are basically two main types of putters that people use.
The first type is fairly similar to what you use when you go to
the local mini golf course. Hopefully the putter you have in your
bag is a little more sophisticated, but in general the putter
is going to be the same.
The second kind of putter is much different. The biggest difference
is the fact that this putter is a good foot or two feet taller
than the putter you would normally use. This putter uses a different
kind of grip that involves one arm being over the top of the club
before you putt.
Some people prefer this method, while it is entirely uncomfortable
for others. You may want to give it a try sometime, but be ready
to do a lot of practicing. You do not want to use golf putters
like this in a tournament until you are completely ready and comfortable.
